Theaters in New York City began showing cheap Kung-Fu movies in the 70s. They became a hit with the urban youth. NYC was also giving birth to Hip-Hop around the same time.
Both Kung-Fu & Hip-Hop resonated with young minorities eager to find their own identity. Kung-Fu movies displayed a non-white hero that they could look up to.
Hip-Hop was a new outlet that gave urban people a way to express themselves.
